Ingredient Spotlight: Walnuts

Thursday, 13 March 2014 10:29  by Emily S.

In the midst of pecans, almonds and peanuts, walnuts are often overshadowed. But these nuts have a lot to give us. Walnuts are abundant in healthy fats, vitamins and antioxidant properties. This spring, explore the health benefits of this wonderful super food.

Heart: Walnuts are probably most well known for being heart healthy due to being rich in vitamin E. They even lower the risk of a heart attack. Out of all the nuts, walnuts contain the most antioxidant activity. They are plentiful in omega 3 oils as well as alpha-linolenic acid. These fatty acids lower cholesterol levels and potentially protect against diabetes.

Mind: Omega 3 oils, folic acid and zinc all enhance our mood. Containing all of these, walnuts help fight off depression. Omega 3 has the ability to increase serotonin levels in the brain, therefore improving mood. The zinc in walnuts can reduce stress levels. Walnuts contain melatonin in them, which can assist in better sleep.

Body: Walnuts are excellent for our skin. Omega 3 can make skin look luminous. Walnuts can also be finely crushed up and used has a facial scrub. The combination of vitamin E and B-vitamins allow walnuts to fight free radicals, delaying signs of aging. Because it nourishes cells, walnut oil moisturizes skin and strengthens hair.

Incorporating walnuts in a diet can be as simple as adding them to a spinach or fruit salad. If you love the taste of walnuts, try baking a walnut pie this spring!
