Self-Care Summer Hair Health

Written by Emily S.

Self-care is an important part of wellness. Taking time to relax, de-stress and address your needs helps decrease anxiety, depression and build self-worth.

After spending three days in a row soaking up sun on the lake and in a boat, my hair is in need of some rejuvenation. Summer hair damage from chlorine, salt, wind and sun can de-hydrate the hair, making it dry and brittle.

Of course prevention is always best, and there are quick and easy ways to prevent sun damage to the scalp and hair. A simple baseball cap or wide brim hat, as well as an SPF spray for the hair can help protect your scalp from sunburn and the eventual dreaded scalp peeling.

But if it is too late to prevent the damage, there are natural hair rinses that can moisturize dry, weak hair and wash out chlorine that basic shampoo and soap may leave behind.

Honey Rinse: Massage approximately 1/2-cup honey and 1 to 2 tbsp olive oil to loosen the honey for easier application to clean, damp hair, let sit for 20 minutes. Then rinse with warm water. You can use this treatment once a month.

Why this works: Honey is a natural moisturizing agent with antioxidant power. Olive oil is also a natural moisturizing tool and leaves the hair shiny and smooth.

Avocado Mask: A simple deep conditioning avocado is perfect for extremely damaged hair. The proteins and fat naturally nourish and revive hair. Using the flesh from one ripe avocado, and mix with 1-2 tablespoons almond oil and 1 egg yolk and blend in a blender. After a shampoo, start from the bottom and work your way up the hair. Using a shower cap, wrap hair up and wait 15-20 minutes. Rinse out in the shower.

Why this works: Avocado is full of fats and proteins that nourish damaged hair. The egg yolk also contains proteins as well as sulfur, which can relieve an itchy scalp and increase volume.
