Find Your Retreat

Wednesday, 18 February 2015 00:00  by Lori R.

The most amazing trip I was fortunate enough to take was a two-week retreat to Greece when I was 25 years old. I was newly married, not yet pregnant, and searching for answers to deep, philosophical questions about purpose, relationship, and spiritual fulfillment. There, I found the solitude necessary to clear my mind and reveal the answers I was seeking.

A retreat is meant to be a time of quiet seclusion; a withdrawal from what is unreasonable or distressing. The inspiring streets of Athens, the majestic Parthenon, and the rustic, farm community island of Lefkas provided the perfect sanctuary for my time of reflection. My Aunt Carmen, who moved to Europe as a teen, taught herself a dozen languages and created a successful translation business, was my hostess and mentor. Outside of planned outings, she afforded me plenty of time alone to come to my own conclusions about my alcoholic husband, my desire to have a child, my career path, my place of service in my community and my spiritual identity.

At that time, I was too young to have experienced many hardships. In later years, I have been blessed with excellent medical care and supportive family members who helped me avoid the need for a formal retreat after the loss of my brother, going through a divorce, and starting life over on my own. Depression and anxiety could have easily overtaken me and led to substance abuse or debilitating, complicated grief.
