Road Rage

Road Rage

Thursday, 09 July 2015 00:00  by Kristi C.
If you need proof that we, as a society, are gradually losing our social skills, look around you on your next drive. If you drive through any congested area during heavy traffic you will more than likely encounter a case of road rage. You see it every day. People speeding past, changing lanes with no signal, weaving in and out of traffic, tailgating and even intentionally locking others out of traffic are all versions of road rage. Some angry drivers have even planned ahead and created nasty little signs to…
Reaching the Summit

Reaching the Summit

Wednesday, 08 July 2015 00:00  by Kristi C.
Spring in Afghanistan brings with it explosions, gunfire, and bombings. The beauty of the mountains is often obscured by the never-ending turmoil of religious and political conflict in a region where many families struggle to provide the basic necessities of life. Spring also brings with it hope that doesn’t care about international boundaries. This year, in the war torn mountains of Afghanistan, spring also brings with it a team of 12 Afghan women who are bucking the political and religious constraints they have chaffed under all of their lives to…
Surviving a Sudden Attack

Surviving a Sudden Attack

Tuesday, 07 July 2015 00:00  by Kristi C.
Imagine dozing in a hammock in the middle of a national park thinking that at that moment, all is right with the world. Then, all of a sudden, a bear sneaks up on you and drags you from the hammock and into the woods. You go from sleeping peacefully to awakening in intense pain experiencing a level of horror that is inconceivable. Imagine the terror of thinking that, in that moment, your life will end. You call out for help, certain that your voice will not be heard. Understanding the…
Shark Attack!

Shark Attack!

Sunday, 05 July 2015 00:00  by Kristi C.
Over the weekend, two additional beach goers were brutally attacked by a shark while swimming off the southern coast of North Carolina outside of Oak Island. The first attack, from several days ago, resulted in the injury of a boogie boarder. The most recent attacks resulted in two separate teenagers losing part of their arm. The youngest victim, a thirteen-year-old girl, may lose part of her leg as well. Both of this weekend’s attacks occurred within 3 miles and within 90 minutes of each other. Unfortunately, the attacks happened so…
Haricots Verts Nicoise with Summer Squash and Opal Basil
Source: The A.O.C. Cookbook by Suzanne Goin Part of the allure of a delicious meal is the aroma of the ingredients that captures your imagination long before making contact with your palate. As the chef, you benefit from the essence of the meal as it is being created. So if you don’t think preparing a nutritious, vitamin-rich, aromatic meal is as good for your mental health as eating it, think again! The exotic aroma of haricots verts, summer squash and cherry tomatoes sautéing in a delicious slippery bath of anchovy-spiked…
Radical Acceptance in Charleston Church Shooting
On June 17, Dylann Roof sat in on a Bible study group at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in downtown Charleston, South Carolina. After sitting with the group for about an hour, he rose, pulled out a firearm, and began firing. In all, nine people were killed in the horrific events that unfolded within the sanctity of the historic church. The entire nation was shocked and entered mourning as details began to emerge on national news. Immediately, there was an outpouring of support with other churches urging prayer and…
How to Tell a Good Story

How to Tell a Good Story

Friday, 03 July 2015 00:00  by Kristi C.
Come on in, pull up a chair, and sit for a spell, June is a time to spin a yarn in Tennessee during the Smoky Mountain Tunes and Tales Festival in Gatlinburg. It’s a time when storytellers and musicians invade the town and infect the population with joyful sounds and dramatic tales entertaining young, old, and every age in between. The costumed performers portray characters from as far back as the 1800’s and provide free performances to spark interest in the art of stories and storytelling. Their goal is to…
Relief from Oppression

Relief from Oppression

Thursday, 02 July 2015 00:00  by Lori R.
What an incredible feeling of relief African Americans must have enjoyed when slavery was abolished. The joy shown in the “Love Wins” campaign illustrates the reprieve that homosexuals probably feel after years of feeling they were not treated as equals. Persecution based on race, beliefs, personal preferences or any number of factors can be a constant pressure that causes a person stress and makes them feel “less than.” People have long ago overcome the stigma of being “mental patients.” In this liberal 2015, we speak freely of our mental health…
Is Your Pet Emergency Kit Ready?

Is Your Pet Emergency Kit Ready?

Wednesday, 01 July 2015 00:00  by Kristi C.
June is National Safety Month with a focus on emergency preparedness. When making plans for an emergency, don’t forget to include your pets. Remember, our pets depend on us for their safety. During severe weather, be sure to bring you pets in, not just when it is cold. Some pets are frightened by thunder and lightning. When frightened, pets can present behaviors you normally do not see. They can dig under a fence, jump a gate, or even chew through their enclosures. If a tree or tree limb falls on…
Workin’ Man’s Lunch

Workin’ Man’s Lunch

Tuesday, 30 June 2015 00:00  by Kristi C.
Some of life’s simple pleasures come paired with a partner. Think about burger and fries, bread and butter, corned beef and cabbage, fish and chips, bacon and eggs, or bagels and cream cheese. If you happen to be from the Deep South, you will notice that I missed an iconic pairing . . . an RC Cola and a Moon Pie. It was known as the ‘working man’s lunch’ early on because back in the 1930s the Moon Pie was the largest snack on the rack that could be purchased…
Watermelon Feta and Orzo Salad

Watermelon Feta and Orzo Salad

Sunday, 28 June 2015 00:00  by Kristi C.
For me, summer is a time to picnic in the mountains. It is one of my favorite methods of clearing the stress after a long workweek to return clarity to my mental health. Picnics are cathartic, helping to reduce anxiety and depression through the sights and sounds associated with nature. It is possible to leave the foothills, where temperatures are in the 90s, and make your way into the heart of the Smoky Mountains to find temperatures in the upper 70s. This dramatic drop in temperatures makes the mountains an…
The Break You Give Yourselfie

The Break You Give Yourselfie

Sunday, 28 June 2015 00:00  by Yolanda F.
In 2011, Science Daily reported a study by the Douglas Mental Health University Institute called "Stress in the city: Brain activity and biology behind mood disorders of urbanites." The summary was as follows: “Being born and raised in a major urban area is associated with greater lifetime risk for anxiety and mood disorders. Until now, the biology for these associations had not been described. A new study shows that two distinct brain regions that regulate emotion and stress are affected by city living.” What does that mean to me? I…
Music and Memories

Music and Memories

Saturday, 27 June 2015 00:00  by Kristi C.
Music speaks to the soul. Whether you listen to pop, rock, country, or classical, you know that music can influence and enhance emotions. In fact, recent research has shown that listening to music is more successful than prescription drugs in decreasing a person’s anxiety before undergoing surgery. Music can improve the function of the body’s immune system and reduce levels of stress. In addition, music therapy, when combined with standard care, is a successful treatment for depression. Music affects the physical body and the mind. Music motivates people. Whether being…
If the Walls Could Talk

If the Walls Could Talk

Friday, 26 June 2015 00:00  by Yolanda F.
The Gramercy Park Hotel is full of ghosts. Potentially, I mean. I knew this before stepping through the revolving door, but didn’t realize the extent of it until a couple of hours ago when I began researching it. I’m glad I didn’t know then what I know now because I may not have slept very well that night. I was scheduled to meet members of the Brookhaven Retreat team at the Gramercy the day of the Linehan Awards Dinner at the New York City loft so we could all go…
What I Learned From The Clearance Bin

What I Learned From The Clearance Bin

Wednesday, 24 June 2015 00:00  by Kristi C.
Several weeks ago I needed to have my tires checked. Since I had purchased them from a local dealer near the shopping mall, I had ample time to do some shopping while my car was being worked on. In one store, there was a prominent display of clearance items and a brilliant blue skirt caught my attention. It was a deep royal blue and was lightly textured. It was also in my size. Normally I would never consider such a bold color but, since it was on clearance, I figured…
