International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, which takes place on October 17, was started by the United Nations in 1993 to eliminate the violence of poverty. Brookhaven Retreat recognizes that emotionally broken women often suffer from emotional and spiritual poverty due to neglect or not knowing how to care for these needs.
Emotional poverty occurs when someone lacks the ability to deal with difficult circumstances in life without emotional harm to themselves. They may escape through substance abuse, disruptive behavior or turning to various escape outlets such as excessive spending, affairs or drug use.
Women affected with mental health or substance abuse issues hunger for emotional balance, healing and wholeness, and have often neglected their emotional and spiritual needs. Brookhaven Retreat’s goal for the day is to remind women about the broad spectrum of therapy tools they have learned to ease the pain created by emotional poverty and foster emotional wholeness in the long term. Such tools include individual and group therapy sessions, equine therapy, spiritual counseling, holistic bodywork and mindful reflection.
By cultivating mindfulness and acceptance, creating a group of emotionally strong support people and connecting with resources that help in the journey toward emotional wholeness, women can achieve lasting mental, spiritual, emotional and physical wellbeing.
